Debate in White House on Economic Fix
January 17, 2008
There are debates going on right now in the White House over how strong the President should push Congress in making President Bush’s tax cuts permanent. It’s an issue that is a priority to the President; however, Democrats feel that a permanent tax cut could destroy the plan before it is even released. And the big issue right now is that there are hopes that this will be a bipartisan plan that could benefit the economy greatly; but, both sides need to really work together to get it to work. It’s a Republican administration and a Democratic congress, so they need to both agree. And that’s where the debate in the White House comes in.
One side of the debate are those that feel that President Bush needs to cut back on the permanent tax cuts if they are to get the plan pushed through Congress. To get the package through congress, Bush’s ambitions need to be cut back for the better of the agreement. However, on the other side are those very strict economic conservatives who feel that there is not a need for an economic rescue package and should, instead, use the plan to gain leverage in getting Congress to pass permanent tax cuts. What President Bush is going to do, though, is unsure.
However, what is sure is that he is making the economy a very big issue. It’s never a good thing for a President to leave office as the one that ruined the economy. With his tax cuts expiring in 2010, he feels that with the economy hurting so much, the people need to know that there will be low taxes. The economy is a huge issue right now and there is going to need to be an agreement among the two parties for continuous success. When President Bush gives his State of the Union address, we will learn what exactly his plans are for an emergency plan. But until then, the two sides of the White House will debate over what is the best plan.
